After The Flood

all i'm supposed to be; sitting, observing his week of debauchery. i'm in the bathtub with gallons of vacancy. i'm in the bathtub that swallowed my empathy. i'm all alone as he chokes.
all i'm allowed to be sits at a table with glasses of vacancy, poured from a box.
glasses of vacancy (stained yellow table cloth), poured from a box as the facts disagree with the facts that we've already lost.
and on the street curb
lies a dead bird
and on the street curb
lie your dead words

Running Water
10:17
|

i've got a shrine of dirty dishes i won't wash
and glasses in the corners just collected dust
and plates covered with honey with caught forgotten thoughts
and spoons that lost their usefulness a long time ago
i've got some plasticine i stole when i was worried
it's balled up and printed with stress from my hands
and i'd yell through the night
and push my bones together
but i spin the tap around and we've still got running water
so take a glass
and rinse it out
and take a sip
and clean your mouth
i've got ten things that i need done in a hurry
but i can't do all the others until i've finished number one
and squeezing the universe into a ball it isn't easy
so everyday ends with nothing done at all
and i've got a wall with forty old reminders
they're written on white napkins with big round coffee stains
and reading them all i hear is ringing in the background
i thought i got the meaning but it never stays the same
so take a glass
and rinse it out
and take a sip
and clean your mouth
so take a glass
and rinse it out
and take a sip
and spit it out
i've got five flashing lights that keep turning on and off
and my eyes can't adjust to the patterns that they're making
so i've closed them tight, i'm seeing red, until i fall asleep
and i have that dream where i'm too scared to try and cross the street
i've got the last ten pages of a book to read
but pages 305 and 306 were damaged in the flood
the words still make their sounds and stay in the same language
but the characters behave differently when put under the stress
so take a glass
and rinse it out
and take a sip
and clean your mouth
so take a glass
and rinse it out
and take a sip
and spit it out
so take a glass
and rinse it out
and take a sip
and clean your mouth
so take a glass
and rinse it out
and take a sip
and drown yourself

One More Day

|

and if i know that i will end up somewhere else
is it bad if i just stay one more day
and if our home starts to cave in on itself
is it bad if i just stay one more day

Self Portrait
04:53
|
|||
i can't feel my heart
over and over it stops and it starts
i can't feel my lungs
out and in the air goes as it comes
i can't speak, you've won
over and over my words come undone
it's just the portrait i paint
watching the colours drain down the sink

i am the words on my grocery list i remain stationary i hardly exist i'm directed down aisles where i'll just stare as you pick it's the flaw in the plan that i knew all along it's the stain on the pants that won't ever come off tie my hands to the lamp post and pray that i never get caught
sweet apple pie memory stain how i swore on my life i'd never remain
in the back of the laundromat where it last called my name sweet punctual memory games test the time that it takes me to rearrange every word on my list, the excuses i have to exist.

Newspaper Days
03:28
|

newspaper days don't offend me but your melancholic gaze
watching snow melt standing on your back porch you know how i felt
send him away to the garden where the plants they only grow
your brain wasn't made for growing up this way

Stray Cat
06:16
|
|||
imprisoned inside a cage, pulling teeth
in the back yard where we meet
steady hands fall apart
can i get a little bit of leg room here
can i get a little bit of leg room here
for my stray cat
for my stray cat

why would you take my passport and just cross it out
you crossed it out
they'll never let me fly
with my name crossed out
with my name crossed out
with my name crossed out

show me where to go from here you're guiding pass the message back and shoot yourself in time it wont be clear where water runs and rain falls your arm's always warm and your head's clouded "fallen hail on forest floor" he shouted playing me the tapes when all is frozen over
younger years where brains were formed and melted bigger fears of who we're truly helping blowing out the candles when it's not your birthday.

face down in the yard with the farewell card that i signed during the increments of time in which i felt regarded we’re stopping and starting to pick up all the litter i’m not good at saving money but i’ll try a field trip with a maxed out library card a ski trip to the hill in your backyard we woke up in shivers on blankets on the lawn we pissed off your neighbours, i told them that we’re sorry but i’ve been having fun, i just got blood work done
